Apprentice and Training Program Job Description Operating and maintaining heavy construction equipment such as cranes, backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, front-end loaders, forklifts, concrete pumps, etc. Operating Engineers represent operators, mechanics, oilers, fuel truck drivers, lowboy drivers, riggers, signal persons, and other skilled trades. Salary Range Apprentice wages vary from 75% to 90% of journeyman wages. After a three-month probation, apprentices may qualify for benefits, such as family health insurance, pension plan, life insurance, dental, and eye care. Pre-Apprenticeship Requirements Must be at least 17 years of age. Operator Apprenticeship Requirements Copy of birth certificate. Mechanic Apprentice Requirements Copy of birth certificate. Training Description This is a four-year, nationally recognized training program. It is registered with the Florida Department of Education. The program includes four years (8000 hours) of on-the-job training, 288 hours of classroom training, and 288 hours of hands-on training, totaling 576 classroom hours.
